Meet Our Founder
I’m Mel Brown, the founder of Storge Family Therapy Centre, and a dedicated Clinical Family Therapist with a passion for empowering individuals and families to overcome challenges and enhance their relationships.
With a background in Clinical Family Therapy, I specialise in working with families experiencing the complexities of life, and individuals grappling with challenges including the impact of their family of origin on their current lives.
-
After obtaining my degree in Clinical Family Therapy from Latrobe University, I further specialised in family therapy, recognizing early on the transformative impact that understanding and resolving familial and personal conflicts can have on one’s life. I have over 15 years of experience working with families, helping numerous families navigate the delicate intricacies of relationships shaped by both past and present experiences.
-
My therapeutic approach is rooted in compassion, empathy, and a profound respect for the unique journey of each client. I believe in a tailored approach to therapy, incorporating evidence-based practices such as the many lenses of Systemic Family Therapy, Single Session Therapy, Trauma Therapy, Attachment therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focussed therapy and others to address the specific needs and goals of each family or individual.
I am committed to creating a supportive and safe environment where clients can explore their emotions, challenges, and aspirations. My goal is to help you understand and reshape the narratives that may be hindering your growth, empowering you to forge deeper connections and embrace a more fulfilling life.
-
With a rich history in family therapy, I have dedicated my career to empowering families, addressing both the intricate dynamics of family units and the individual challenges faced by its members. My expertise extends to working effectively with diverse family subsystems, including sibling relationships, parental roles, couples, and parent-child interactions.
-
With a diverse clinical background spanning various complex settings, I bring a depth of experience in family therapy that informs my holistic and compassionate approach. My work at The Bouverie Centre in Melbourne allowed me to engage with families navigating intricate relational challenges, delivering systemic interventions and single session therapy to create meaningful, lasting change. My extensive experience in addressing whole family dynamics, adolescent concerns, trauma, and mental health challenges has shaped my ability to provide tailored, evidence-based interventions that foster resilience and connection. Additionally, my role in the Women In Prison Project provided the opportunity to work with highly traumatized incarcerated women, supporting their relational healing and reintegration into society to reduce recidivism.
-
I have successfully addressed a wide range of concerns through my practice:
Relationship Dynamics: Enhancing communication and resolving conflicts within various family structures.
Parenting Challenges: Offering strategies and support for effective parenting practices.
Adolescent Issues: Tackling concerns specific to teenagers, such as behavioural problems, school refusal, and the navigational challenges of growing up.
Mental Health Support: Providing therapeutic interventions for trauma, anxiety, and depression, tailored to meet the individual needs of clients.
-
Outside the therapy room, I am a wife and Mum to three girls from teenagers to adult. I enjoy fitness, hiking and am an avid reader, which I believe helps me bring a balanced and grounded perspective to my practice. I am passionate about continuous learning and often participate in training and seminars to stay updated with the latest advancements in therapy.
